Description

This piece, centered around the Roimata Toroa, reflects the deep connection between love and loss. The Roimata Toroa, or "tear of the albatross," symbolizes the tears we shed in remembrance of those who have passed. These tears, though born of sorrow, are also a way for us to carry their memory forward, nourishing us through the journey of grief. Surrounding this central motif, the Purapura Whetū—the star-shaped patterns—act as a gentle reminder of those who no longer walk with us on this earth. On the left side, the stars shine for the loved ones we’ve lost, guiding us as we continue our lives, strengthened by the love they gave. Their energy feeds our tears, granting us resilience to navigate the difficult days ahead and to honour their legacy for the generations to come which are represented by the purapura whetū on the right.

Created during a time of great personal loss, this artwork holds a special significance. It was crafted with the intention of offering solace and strength, particularly to those who will face many "firsts" without their loved ones by their side. May this piece serve as a reminder that even in grief, we are held by the love and memory of those who came before us, and may we find the support we need as we continue our own journeys.
